The original Purple Heart medal was established by George Washington when he was the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1782. A Purple Heart is a heart-shaped medal within a gold border, 1 3/8 inches (35 mm) wide, containing a profile of General Washington. The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after April 5, 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded.
